First Gazan Academics Rescued by the Council for At-Risk Academics Arrive Safely in the UK

The Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) recently announced that the first Gazan academics rescued by the charity since the outbreak of war on 7 October 2023 have now safely arrived in the UK. The charity, which provides a lifeline to scholars at risk from persecution, violence and conflict, rescued two Palestinian academics and their families, with the scholars found placements at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge.

Since October 2023, the charity has received over 120 applications for help from Palestinians in need of urgent support.  Over the coming weeks, the charity will support the imminent arrival of 13 more Palestinian academics, who have also been found placements at leading universities across the UK.

The outbreak of the war over a year ago has contributed to a major 400% surge in demand for the charity’s help in the past three academic years alone. In response, the charity has launched an urgent fundraising appeal, touring UK universities to build further awareness for the charity’s mission and to help it process the surge in requests for help.

The Communication Group plc is providing strategic PR support for Cara helping to raise awareness and more funding for the crucial work the charity carries out. Media coverage highlighting the safe rescue of the first Gazan academics to the UK was secured across leading national, international and trade publications, including in The Guardian, The National (Scotland), NBC News, The Scotsman, The Herald, The National (UAE) and Research Professional News.
