The Communication Group plc is pleased to announce its appointment by The Institute of Now, a human rights organisation committed to making change happen for victims of the ‘Imprisonment for Public Protection’ crisis.
Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) is a form of ‘indefinite’ prison sentence introduced by the UK government in 2003, and abolished just 9 years later in 2012 following widespread criticism. However, the abolition of IPPs was not made retrospective, which left thousands in prison, still subject to their original ‘open-ended’ sentence. Almost 3,000 people remain in prison today serving IPP sentences. Many of these people were originally sentenced for minor crimes and have now served multiples of their original terms.
The Communication Group plc’s role will be focused on supporting The Institute of Now to spotlight the continuing human, social, moral, and financial costs of IPPs, stimulate support for victims, and drive change.
